Where did law and order and rule of law go?

What’s up with McCain supporters going around and smashing people’s windows and stealing their yard signs?

Just more evidence, that there isn’t a conservative party in the US, just creaping fascism.  The consequences of a two party system is you get to vote for people who have no respect for law and no respect for law and order.  Or you get to vote for a party that might disagree with you on your favorite issue.  Or you can stay home.

Without law and order, without the rule of law, abortion and who is more pro-gun is the least of our concerns.

Movie Review: V for Vendetta

Fantastic movie.  Everyone should see it ask themselves, which party, given that we only have two, is likely be backbone of the Norsefire party in the US?  Which party would create fear and war to remove our freedoms? Which party will use fear of the other to make obey what we would never obey if we were afraid? (In our own back yard of Virginia no less)  We have only one thing to fear, and it isn’t the fear– it is that we vote people who would manipulate the fear of everyone around us.

I’m not afraid, and besides, inspiring true fear takes a certain amount of competence.

Everyone planning to vote should watch this movie.

Renting in Northern Virginia

Renting in NoVa is cheaper than buying, still.  For example, if I could find a roomate to pay $800 a month and if I kept paying my modest $1200 a month, I could rent for $2000 a month a three bedroom house on Quincy Street in Arlington or 5 bedrooms in Dale City in Woodbridge.  Fairfax and Alexandria must be 4 BRs for $2000.

With my handy “reality check” spreadsheet, it says $2,000  a month is the same as buying a house for $235,000– taxes and condo fees really take their bite.

Homesdatabase.com and Redfin say that while those 3BR houses exist in that price range, they’re not in walking distance to the metro, at least not in Arlington, while there are tons of 3BR houses renting for $1500 to $2000 in walking distance to the metro.  Also, many of these sub $235,000 bargains are in low price hot spots, which often are low price on account of them being magnets for social problems.

Super commuters in Dumfries can buy a 5BR houses for $2000 a month, but why when you can rent a 4BR for $1600?  And you can buy a 4BR duplex near Huntington metro for about $2000 a month, too.

Conclusion: Renting, despite the big drop in prices is still cheaper than buying.  If you have a roomate that you can tollerate, than buying is flushing money down the toilet.

Jumble: Missed two events, Cut work early

What’s doing.  I’ve got a cold. So I missed not one, but two possible events.  At least I baked some pies.  Got two apple pies.

Toki Pona Thought. I’d marry a woman who spoke toki pona on the spot. (Not an original thought, sorry.)  But now that I’m talking about conlangs, I’ve thought it would be very handy for there to be a pronoun to mean “you” as in “you guys on the other side of the fourth wall”  It would have made sinfest.net clearer today.

Match.com Thoughts. There’s got to be something better out there.  It hasn’t changed in the years since I last tried to use it.

Cold Thoughts.  Just as it pleasantly got cold outside, I get a cold.  Now that isn’t fair. Cold hearted viruses.  Is it entirely Buddhist & compassionate to wish that these viruses will fail to reproduce and every bit of their genetic information were erased from the earth?  Rat bastard molecules.

Politics. Even Fairfax county is joining in on the jim crow, anti-brown people dog pile.  So if an immigrant working in the US–remember this is 5% of the working population in the US–gets accused of a small crime, but large enough to get thrown in jail, he will be punished with exile, a punishment normally used for natives when execution is impractical.  Making the penalty disproportionate to the crime doesn’t mean people will obey the law more, but it will mean more desperate behavior when police try to arrest immigrants.

Also, there is a human rights issue involved.  Fairfax county isn’t going to be deporting the Swiss back to Switzerland.  Fairfax will be deporting brown people to third world countries with dicey prisons. There are things we don’t do to humans, even if they have committed a crime.(Excluding Republicans of course, who don’t mind torture)   Heck, there are some things we don’t even do to animals and they’re food.   We don’t flay people, we don’t give them electrical shocks until their teeth fall out.  Why should turn prisoners over to foreign governments who have no such qualms?

And there is the effectiveness issue. Many foreign countries won’t take back their foreign nationals if they are in jail for any criminal offenses.  Like the death penalty, deportation is not cheap.  If the country doesn’t want them, Fairfax County will be sending prisoners on a round trip back to Fairfax County.

Moral of the story, keep your passport on you at all times if you are in Fairfax County Virginia.

Anyone want to wager if we see a resurgence of the Klan in the DC suburbs?  Anyone want to bet what party the future anti-brown people candidates in Fairfax will be?

Politics: Prince William County Pulls Back From the Brink

Prince William County, Virgina decided that it did not want to revive Jim Crow, or at least not right now. The county board decided that rather that implement a racist and ill-spirited law that would cost a lot in terms of man power, they would defer the topic.

[Update, PWC did eventually follow through with passing the anti-immigration law and is working on enforcing it now]

Repression is not cheap. Let’s list the top ten costs that deterred PWC from going through with reducing themselves to laughing stocks:

1. $300,000 for armbands, one for each Real American

2. $1,600,000 for internment camps

3. $800 for discount army surplus Zyklon B (Ok, Godwin’s law. A better historical analogy would be the Ku Klux Klan, but WW2 Germans are funnier)

4. $1,800,000 for defense against state and federal constitutional challenge

5. $10,000 for the wrongful deportation of US citizens because they weren’t carrying their Real American badge and ID card

6. $800,000 to install additional water fountains and restrooms for Unverified Americans, also known as “Brown People”

7. $1,000,000 in overtime pay for police officers doing road blocks, perimeter checks and “Brown People” check points

8. $450,000 in lost tax revenue as fortune 500 companies pull out of Apartheid loving jurisdictions

9. $150,000 changing all the letterhead from Prince William County to People of White Color County

10. $15,000,000 building the great wall of Prince William County

And as a post script, I give you a new law, Matthew’s Law– the longer a discussion on how southern governments write laws targeting brown people, the higher the probability that some one will mention the Ku Klux Klan.

While I as a former resident of Prince William, I am happy to see Prince William pull back from the brink. When I lived in Prince William, a lot of people in my neighborhood were immigrants, went to school with my son and were my customers when I worked for the county.

The law that PWC tried to pass and uphold was not about highly technical issues of who should pay or who has jurisdiction for immigration. This is a matter of hate, racism, and the basest of human urges, the urge to destroy that which is not like them. Few dare to be blatant racists. Let us not allow thinly varnished racists try to ruin the United State of America–the most unique melting pot in the world, a place where you are in the club if you are here. We are *the* borg. We will assimilate. We will even assimilate the racists someday and transform them into real Americans.
